Nasir Young's Summer Studio Updates

Summer Studio Updates

Hello!

Recently, I added a lot of new names to my email list. If you're new here, welcome! I’m Nasir Young, a painter based in Philadelphia. I received my BFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art and am currently represented by Gross McCleaf Gallery.

This is my bi-annual newsletter. If you prefer to follow me on social media, you can follow me on Instagram here: www.instagram.com/nasiryoungart

News & Updates

The Delaware Contemporary Residency

Each year The Delaware Contemporary awards a full-funded residency and professional development to four artists. I was pleased to share the 2023-2024 cohort with Noel Cross, Cony Madariaga, and Zifeng Zang. The program concludes with an exhibition of works created during the term. Thanks Chase Dougherty, Morgan Hamilton and Leslie Kauffman for your support!

Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant

Last winter, I was granted $14,000 by the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation for summer research and travel across the United States including Los Angeles, Nashville, New Hampshire, New York and Kansas City. I’ll be visiting the studios of artists I admire and exploring the visual culture of each destination.

Excursions at Gross McCleaf Gallery

In February, I had my first solo exhibition at Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia. Excursions was a love letter to Philadelphia where I was born and raised. I love studying the visual culture of each city I visit, but Philadelphia’s store fronts, corner stores, graffiti, bridges and street signs will always be the original inspiration for my painting practice.

To learn more about this exhibition, visit John Thornton’s YouTube channel for a video interview or Gross McCleaf’s website for a written interview "Art Sync: Chasing My Own Satisfaction with Elizabeth Johnson, edited by Matthew Crain - both linked below.

MFA at University of Delaware

This fall, I will begin the master’s program at the University of Delaware where I was awarded a full-ride and a teaching fellowship. I’m thrilled to spend the next two years in my studio focusing on my art practice and professional development.

Other Notable Exhibitions and Awards

Thank you all for the ongoing support of me and my practice. I can’t wait to share another update as I get into my first year of graduate school. Hope you have a great summer.
